What counts as a source

Official publications only: Statistics Canada, the Government of Ontario's open data, the Régie de l'énergie du Québec, the price orders of the Atlantic regulators, Finance Canada and provincial finance ministries. A news article or another price site can point us to a change; we publish it only after reading the official text. Prices reported by app users and figures from sites whose terms forbid reuse are not used.

How a figure reaches a page

A script reads each source, keeps the date of the figure and the date it was read, and writes one data file. Pages and calculators read that file; nobody types a price into a page. When a source does not answer, its previous file is kept and the page shows the date of the last figure actually read.

Estimates

The figure for tomorrow is always called an estimate, with its method linked and its past error printed. A tax change that is announced but not yet law, like the end of the federal excise holiday in draft legislation, is described as such.

Independence

Radif Partners receives nothing from stations, oil companies, card programs or apps, and the pages carry no affiliate links. The site is not linked to any public body and does not present itself as one.

Corrections

A reported error is checked against the official source; if we were wrong, the page is corrected the same day. Write through the contact page.
